Western Atlantic—USA (Texas), Gulf of Mexico, Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Guadeloupe, Dominica, Belize, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Venezuela, Trinidad and Tobago, Guiana, and Brazil (Amapá, Pará, Maranhão, Piauí, Ceará, Rio Grande do Norte, Paraíba, Pernambuco, Alagoas, Sergipe, Bahia, Espírito Santo, Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo) (Chace & Hobbs 1969; Crane 1975; Bezerra 2012; Masunari et al. 2020). Remarks. Previous records on the coast of São Paulo include Ubatuba (Colpo & Negreiros-Fransozo 2003; Bezerra 2012), Bertioga (Colpo & Negreiros-Fransozo 2003), and Cubatão (Bezerra 2012). According to Masunari et al. (2020), the occurrence in Piauí, Rio Grande do Norte and Espírito Santo is probable but not officially recorded. Presently, São Paulo state is the southern limit of this species distribution along the western Atlantic (Masunari et al. 2020).
