Western Atlantic—USA (Florida), Gulf of Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, Cuba, Jamaica, Haiti, Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands, Guadeloupe, Barbados, Aruba, Curaçao, Trinidad and Tobago, Colombia to Brazil (Pará, Maranhão, Piauí, Ceará, Rio Grande do Norte, Paraíba, Pernambuco, Alagoas, Sergipe, Bahia, Espírito Santo, Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Paraná, Santa Catarina) (Chace & Hobbs 1969; Crane 1975; Abele & Kim 1986; Bezerra 2012; Sousa et al. 2015; Masunari et al. 2020). Remarks. Previous records on the coast of São Paulo (as Minuca mordax ) include São Sebastião, Ilhabela (Ilha de São Sebastião) (Crane 1975), and Ubatuba (Benetti & Negreiros-Fransozo 2004; Bezerra 2012). According to Masunari et al. (2020), the occurrence in Piauí is probable but not officially recorded and is morphologically close to its congeners M. rapax and M. mordax .
