We pay our respect to the First Nations and Métis ancestors of this place and reaffirm our relationship with one another. Dan: Oki, and greetings from the University of Lethbridge. My Name is Daniel O’Donnell and my pronouns are he/him. My University’s Blackfoot name is /i’nıskım/, meaning Sacred Buffalo Stone. It is located in traditional Blackfoot Confederacy territory. We honour the Blackfoot people and their traditional ways of knowing in caring for this land, as well as all Aboriginal peoples who have helped shape and continue to strengthen our University community. Barbara: This video is a brief introduction to our workshop at DH2020: Diversity in DH. It will tell you where to find the resources, how to register, and give you some information about the potentially difficult material we will be covering. We are asking for your email address so that we can send you the invitation to our Zoom session and to our Slack Channel. Dan: We ask you to go through some materials before our live interactive session on Friday July 24th at 14:00 UTC. In our live session, we will do some activities and answer questions about our videos and slides. It is important to state that this workshop, and some of the activities we undertake, particularly the Privilege Game, touch on sensitive material that can be triggering to some individuals. Barbara: It is not our intention to victimize anyone, but we cannot swipe these matters under the rug. We touch upon subjects such as addiction, violence, and sexual violence, among others. We recognize that at, any point, participants might feel that a given question is too personal or have other reasons to decline to participate. Dan: Please never feel obliged to participate. We have structured the workshop so that neither participation nor lack of participation will be visible to others. We aim to create a safe environment where we can all have difficult conversations and learn from each other. Barbara: After watching this welcome video, please go through our slides. They contain important concepts that are useful for our conversations. When you have ten minutes, please go to Project Implicit (the link is in our page) and choose one of the implicit bias tests. This is to illustrate how we all, to some degree, have unconscious biases that colour our perceptions. We can talk more about that. Dan: The “technology is not neutral” video will do exactly as it says in its title and show how every day technologies have strong biases. Our webpage also lists the activities and links.
