Summary: | We study the stellar and gas kinematics of the brightest group galaxies (BGGs) in dynamically relaxed and unrelaxed galaxy groups in the SAMI and GAMA surveys. We characterize the dynamical state of the groups using the luminosity gap and the BGG offset from the luminosity centroid of the group. We find evidence for a higher degree of alignment in the gas and stellar velocity maps residing in BGGs of relaxed groups compared to those in unrelaxed galaxy groups, which could be a result of a reduced number of recent galaxy mergers in relaxed or dynamically evolved groups. We find a higher fraction of slow and regular - rotator BGGs in relaxed systems compared to in unrelaxed systems noting that the BGG offset from luminosity centroid appears to have a stronger contribution to the difference than the luminosity gap. The different dynamical states of the groups seem to have clear impacts on the internal gas and stellar dynamics of their group BGGs, which we believe is originated their merger histories. |
