Living amongst small woods and wooded patches in a farmland: how does habitat mosaics influence bird communities, long–term population changes and individual behavior - śycie wśród zadrzewień i lasów śródpolnych: jak mozaika środowisk wpływa na zgrupowania gatunków, długoterminowe trendy liczebności populacji oraz behawior osobniczy

An study area, where an interdisciplinary study on the role of habitat mosaic for distribution, density and functioning of population of many species has been carried out for a long time is the Dezydery Chłapowski Landscape Park, which is broadly known from a "model" farmland structure, ch...

The aim of the lecture is presentation of specific characters of bird communities living in a such mosaics of crop fields and small wooded patches and the evaluation of effectiveness of protection of avifauna in farmland by keeping amount of afforested areas high and diverse. The data presented here was collected from 1964–1966, and afterwards in 1988–2008 with the use of mapping (almost 100 plots), transect (tens kilometers) andpoint count (hundreds of points) methods. The studies was carried out mainly during breeding season. Besides own results, in some cases published or unpublished data gathered by other authors are used. In the lecture the results of an analysis of the relationships between landscape structure (i.e. habitat mosaics) and species number, population density and community structure will be presented. Among others the role of landscape context for birds inhabiting small wood island will be discussed. It will also present the long–term trends in population changes for birds of small wooded patches located in farmland. Based on basis, an evaluation of effectiveness of bird diversity protection in farmland by keeping a rich system of small wooded patches will be undertaken. Using some example of birds (Goldammer, Red–backed Shrike and others) the effect of the habitat mosaic on feeding behavior and establishing of breding territories will be presented.
