Summary:(Uploaded by Plazi for the Bat Literature Project) Territorial males of the pipistrelle (Pipistrellus pipistrellus) and the Nathusius' pipistrelle (Pipistrellus nathusii) acquire harems by defending roost sites. Time of territory establishment, however, differs between them. Pipistrelle males arrive at the mating ground about two months before the onset of the mating period while the Nathusius' pipistrelle males establish their territories just before the start of the mating period. Inter- and intraspeciflc competition is assumed to explain the early territory establishment of the male pipistrelle bat. ...
