Grammatostomias dentatus differs from congeners by the luminous tissue on both sides of body forming a distinct line from the operculum to beyond the pelvic-fin base; 5 pectoral-fin rays; PV 15–16 (Morrow, Gibbs, 1964; Sutton et al., 2020). Geographical distribution. North Atlantic, Indian, and western Pacific oceans (Gibbs, Barnett, 1990; Vinnichenko, 1997; Harold, 2003; Fricke, 2011; Carneiro et al., 2019; Sutton et al., 2020). In the western Atlantic the species is reported from off the United States and Bermudas, between 43ºN and 28ºN (Morrow, Gibbs, 1964; Harold, 2003; Moore et al., 2003; Judkins, Haedrich, 2018). Melo et al. (2020) included G. dentatus in a list of deep-sea fishes of Brazil, without providing information on voucher specimens or locality data. Previously known records of the species in the South Atlantic are actually outside the Brazilian EEZ (ISH 1364-1968; ISH 762-1966).
