С 1905 по 1945 южный Сахалин принадлежал Японии и был префектурой Карафуто. В столице префектуры, г. Тоёхара (Южно-Сахалинск) располагался гравный храм Карафуто - Карафуто-дзиндзя. Все постройки храма были деревянными, за исключением выполненной из огнеупорного бетона сокровищницы, где хранились священные реликвии и дары императора.
