Sensory neurons in the olfactory epithelium are located primarily on the ethmoturbinal (green) and nasoturbinal (yellow) bones. Maxillary turbinals, which carry respiratory epithelium are shown in blue. The arctic fox is not among the sample species but its model is used here because of its particular clarity. 3D models were constructed with Mimics and 3-matic software from high-resolution CT scans.
