Summary: | The design instruction herein are based on the results of comprehensive investigations of the construction properties and performance of bearing media and foundations in the southern zone of the permafrost region. The design chapters are preceded by general rules of application and a chapter on the definitions used in the body of the manual, followed by two chapters on physical and thermophysical characteristics of soils. The design instructions are organized into five chapters. Up-to-date methods of designing bearing media on the basis of the ultimate condition of the structure, not only with reference to the settlement of foundations but also to deformation due to heaving were applied in the USSR for the first time. The instructions also contain additional requirements concerning the design of structures and their foundations, additional instruction for designing natural and artificial ventilation of external elements of the structure, instructions for utilizing thawing permafrost as a bearing medium in construction of large section and large panel buildings, as well as regional information of use in construction in the southern zone, which was not in "Technical Considerations in Designing Foundations in Permafrost". These instructions have been examined and approved by the Board of the Institute of Foundations and Underground Structures, Academy of Construction and Architecture, USSR and recommended as a practical aid to engineering and geological work, as well as in the design, construction and operation of buildings and other structures on permafrost. |
