The predominant soils at Kelsey are stone-free lacustrine varved "clays" composed of rock flour. Perennially frozen ground was encountered in many of the exploratory holes. The active layer was 1-3 ft in low areas and 6-7 in higher ground. Permafrost was found to a depth of 35 ft. Extensive ice lensing had occurred in the varved clays from a thickness of hair-line to 8 inches. Ground temperatures in permafrost measured to depths of 20 ft in undisturbed ground varied from 30.5 to 3l.5 degrees F. The instrumentation consisted of ground temperature installations using thermocouples in nearby undisturbed ground, underneath the dykes and in the flooded zone. To measure possible dyke movements settlement gauges were installed. : Ce rapport décrit le programme de recherche et les détails de l'instrumentation concue et utilisée dans la centrale hydroélectrique de Kelsey afin d'étudier l'effet du dégel sur les digues fondées sur le pergélisol. La plupart des sols de Kelsey sont constitués d'argiles lacustres à varves composées de farine de roches. Le pergélisol a été atteint lors de plusieurs sondages exploratoires. La couche active mesurait 1 à 3 pieds de profondeur dans les zones basses et 6 à 7 pieds dans les zones hautes. Le pergélisol s'étendait parfois jusqu'à une profondeur de 35 pieds. Il se formait des lentilles de glace dans les argiles à varves dont l'é paisseur variait environ de celle d'un cheveu à 8 po. Les températures dans le pergélisol non remanié mesurées à des profondeurs de 20 pi variaient de 30.5 à 31.5 degré F. L' instrumentation consistait en appareils de mesure des tempé ratures enfoncées dans le pergélisol (thermocouples) et le sol des zones voisines des digues ainsi que dans la zone inondée. Des appareils ont été mis en place pour mesurer les tassements des digues.
