: The benthic isopods presented feed on other animals. Serolidae are dorsoventrally flattened forms that lie in wait for their prey either on the sandy bottom (Ceratoserolis trilobitoides) or buried in the sand (Serolis beddardi). Cirolanidae have a cylindrical form and also bury themselves. The related Aegidae (Aega antarctica) are ectoparasites of fish. Gnathiidae are also bloodsuckers in their juvenile stage (manca). As adult animals they live in sponges and no longer ingest food. Chaetiliidae (Glyptonotus antarcticus) live as predators, e.g., of polychaetes. |
