NATO is one of the supporting structures in the building of a unifying Europe. The European Union provides the economic side of the union. Council of Europe - respect for human rights. NATO guarantees security. Europeans, especially residents of small states, perceive the bloc as a guarantee of their security from all misfortunes, so NATO will not disappear anywhere. Meanwhile, the Russian military-political leadership does not realize the real role of NATO in the life of the European continent. The United States and Western European states have tried to delay the moment when NATO will have to expand. Now it’s hard to believe, but at that time relations with Russia were more important for them than relations with Eastern European states, which were then very disappointed: their applications for joining the North Atlantic bloc were postponed. They had to learn all the pangs of jealousy and offended national dignity. It is customary to say that NATO is expanding. But the truth of life was that these Eastern European countries literally burst into NATO, demanding that they be accepted. Neither the Americans nor the Europeans had any reason to say «no» to them - an endless refusal would be open discrimination. And Moscow’s struggle against NATO enlargement was unsuccessful. Poland, Hungary and the Czech Republic were still accepted. Other followers followed. And our relations with these states have deteriorated greatly: they did not like the fact that Russia was trying to prevent them from joining the Alliance. : НАТО - одна из несущих конструкций в здании объединяющейся Европы. Европейский союз обеспечивает экономическую сторону объединения. Совет Европы - соблюдение прав человека. НАТО гарантирует безопасность. Европейцы, особенно жители небольших государств, воспринимают блок как гарантию своей безопасности от всех напастей, поэтому НАТО никуда не исчезнет. Между тем российское военно-политическое руководство не осознает реальную роль НАТО в жизни европейского континента. Соединенные Штаты и западноевропейские государства старались оттянуть момент, когда придется расширять НАТО. Сейчас в это трудно поверить, но в ту пору отношения с Россией для них были важнее отношений с восточноевропейскими государствами, которые испытали тогда большое разочарование: их заявки на вступление в Североатлантический блок откладывались. Им пришлось изведать все муки ревности и оскорбленного национального достоинства. Принято говорить, что НАТО расширяется. Но правда жизни состояла в том, что это восточноевропейские страны буквально ломились в НАТО, требовали, чтобы их приняли. Ни у американцев, ни у европейцев не было оснований говорить им «нет» - бесконечный отказ был бы откровенной дискриминацией. И борьба Москвы против расширения НАТО не увенчалась успехом. Польша, Венгрия и Чехия все равно были приняты. За ними последовали и другие желающие. А наши отношения с этими государствами сильно ухудшились: им не нравилось то, что Россия пыталась им помешать вступить в Североатлантический союз.
