Shoreline Environmental Baseline Surveys in Placentia Bay, NL: A shoreline characterization and assessment of biogeochemistry, nutrients, coliforms, and hydrocarbons.

Placentia Bay, on the Southeast coast of Newfoundland formed by the Burin Peninsula on the west and the Avalon Peninsula on the East, has been identified as a Priority Area for Integrated Management Planning. Successful development in this area relies upon an understanding of the health and conditio...

Successful development in this area relies upon an understanding of the health and condition of the Placentia Bay marine and coastal environment, and baseline data to detect changes related to management and external impacts. To provide scientific data pertaining to the current state of the Placentia Bay, Northeast Avalon Atlantic Coastal Action Program (NAACAP) is conducting a Shoreline Environmental Baseline Program focused on assessing shoreline character and water properties in Placentia Bay. The program design involves sample collection at 8 representative coastal sites in Placentia Bay, 4-times per year, over a 3 1⁄2 -year period from October 2018 to March 2022 : A Niskin bottle was used to collect water samples at a depth of 1 meter at each of the eight collection sites in Placentia Bay. A YSI probe multiparameter Sonde was also used to collect in-situ data on physio-chemical parameters at all sampling locations. Additional lab analysis and data interpretation is in conjunction with Dr. Rachel Sipler (CRC, Chemical Oceanographer) of Ocean Science Centre, Memorial University and the Chemical Analysis and Microbiology Laboratory at Marine Institute. : Dataset Newfoundland DataCite Metadata Store (German National Library of Science and Technology)
