Morphologic condition of a thyroid gland of tundra voles living in the sites with increased natural radioactivity

The article presents the results of research of thyroid glands’ (TG) structural-functional conditions of tundra voles living in the sites with normal and increased level of natural radioactivity (Ukhta District, Komi Republic, Russia). It is stated that in-population factors cause modification of st...

It is stated that in-population factors cause modification of structural-functional state of rodents’ TG in conditions of radioactive environmental pollution. According to morphological parameters thyroid parenchyma is less active during voles’ population decline phase as compared with the peak phase. Many generations long vole populations’ living in conditions of increased natural radioactivity level causes significant deviations in TG structural and functional state as compared with the control group. The amount of radiation exposure depends on sex, age of the animal, the capture area, as well as on the population cycle phase.
