Europa ist mit den Alpen, Karpaten, Dinarischem Gebirge, Pyrenäen und Apennin im Zentrum bzw. Süden und dem Skandinavischen Gebirge im Norden am stärksten gegliedert. Overview of the most important mountains in the world: This chapter comprises the typical characteristics, i.e. geographic position, highest peaks, glaciation and volcanic activities, of mountains in the Americas, Europe, Africa, Asia, Australia/Oceania and Antarctica. The largest high mountains lie in Asia, the Andes in South America have the longest extension in North-South direction, i.e. 7.500 km.
