| Summary: | This is a photograph of Frs. Brack, McLaughlin and P. Donnelly [back row, left to right] posing for a picture with some of the people of the Danzhu community. In the middle row are four men and in the front row are two young women wearing veils with older women at the ends beside them.; Born in Massachusetts, Fr. Brack came to Maryknoll in 1935, after receiving a degree at Holy Cross College. He was ordained to the priesthood on June 11, 1939. After ordination Fr. Brack was assigned to the Maryknoll mission in the Wuchow Vicariate, South China. During World War II he remained in China and served first as pastor of the mission in Taiwan and later Chungking. Among his pastoral duties was service to the U.S. military personnel in that area, for which he was awarded the Emblem for Meritorious Civilian Service. He was named procurator of the Maryknoll house in Hong Kong in 1946. He returned to the United States in 1948 and because he had a talent with financial matters, he served in several positions for the Society in the United States. -- Rev. McLoughlin was born in Lancashire, England, and became a naturalized U.S. citizen in 1912. He entered The Venard, Maryknoll's Apostolic College, in 1923, and was ordained in 1935. He was assigned to Wuchow, remaining there throughout the was years. After a brief visit to the U.S. after the war, he returned to Wuchow in 1947. He was expelled from China in 1951. In 1953 he was assigned to Transfiguration parish in Chinatown, New York City, and to Hong Kong in 1961 where he died in 1980. -- Born in Pennsylvania, Fr. Donnelly came to Maryknoll in 1929 and was ordained to the priesthood in 1932 and assigned to Wuchow in South China. In 1940 he was appointed Society Superior for the Wuchow mission. He was imprisoned by the Chinese Communists in 1951 and in 1952 had to leave China for Hong Kong. He served as chaplain for civilian workers in Greenland and later spent many years in Taiwan where he died and was buried. |
