Demographic variation of least auklets and red-legged kittiwakes at the Pribilof Islands, Bering Sea, 1991-2017

This dataset contains seabird survival and productivity data and was part of a modeling project in which we principally used program R for analysis. R code was used to connect the different parts of data (abundance, survival, and productivity). These data are presented as 9 CSV files, 11 R files and...

R code was used to connect the different parts of data (abundance, survival, and productivity). These data are presented as 9 CSV files, 11 R files and 1 SAS file, describing counts of adults birds, annual survival rates of adult birds, as determined by following individually banded birds, and measuring breeding success, i.e., do pairs successfully raise a chick. We examined population dynamics of two notable seabird species - red-legged kittiwakes and least auklets at the Pribilof Islands in the Bering Sea in 2017. A principal motivation for this work is that more than 80% of the world’s population of red-legged kittiwakes breed at the Pribilof Islands and thus understanding demographic patterns of this rare species can signal how much conservation concern to consider, and what components of the population (e.g., reproduction versus adult survival) are driving the abundance of this species. With 28 years of data on the kittiwakes and 14 on the least auklets, we have an opportunity to examine how different life histories result in different dynamics.
