В статье рассматривается история арктической экспедиции паровой яхты «Жаннетт», оснащенной и отправленной в 1879 г. в плавание на деньги медиамагната Джеймса Гордона Беннетта-младшего. История трагической судьбы членов экипажа «Жаннетт» только увели-чила тираж газеты «The New York Herald», а освещение деятельности следующих экспеди-ций, посланных на поиски пропавших членов команды «Жаннетт», принесла новую прибыль владельцу газеты. : The article deals with the history of the Arctic expedition of the steamer «Jeannette», equipped on money of media mogul James Gordon Bennett Jr. in 1879. The story of the tragic fate of the «Jeannette» crew members only increased the circulation of «The New York Herald», and coverage of the activities of the next expeditions sent in search of the missing members of the «Jeannette» crew brought new income to the owner of the newspaper.
