Северные и арктические регионы Российской Федерации являются стратегически важными территориями в области освоения и развития минерально-сырьевого и топливно-энергетического комплексов. B научной статье выделены особенности и сложности развития северных регионов, связанные с климатическими, технологическими и социально-экономическими условиями жизни. В качестве примера северного региона рассмотрен г. Воркута. Теоретико-методологической базой исследования служат научные труды отечественных и зарубежных ученых в области проблематики и предпосылок устойчивого развития северных регионов в современных условиях. При проведении исследования были применены аналитический, статистический, стратегический методы и отраслевой анализ. Информационной базой статьи являются государственные программы и стратегии в области развития северных территорий.
