: This article publishes for the first time in full a drawing of the Morzhegorsk Nikolskaya pustyn, one of the unpreserved small monasteries of the Russian North. Considering the very limited number of sources on its history, this cartographic document is of absolute value. The images made by simple graphic depictions such as lines and squares, and rectangles, show the main buildings of the monastery complex: 2 temples, a chapel and cells, a cellar, well, gates and fence, as well as a stable and a cowshed. All the objects are signed. Despite the extreme conventionality of the images, the drawing is unique due to the written text which is uncharacteristic for this type of cartographic documents. It contains a monks’ petition to the bishop for the construction of a new church, with an indication of the distances between the main buildings of the monastery complex. Thanks to this text, it became known about the little-studied types of 17th century documents — cartographic works with an appeal to a higher official included in it. Thus, the document shows a mechanism of communication between monks and the ruling bishop on important issues of the monastery life. The information about the distances between the buildings has permitted the author to calculate the area of the monastery, as well as to make the reconstruction of its plan. This drawing is, perhaps, the only surviving cartographic image of a small monastery of the Russian North of the 17th century. Using methods of external and internal source criticism the author has been able to fully reveal the information potential of a cartographic document — to determine its attribution and find out the nature of the configuration, development and architecture of the monastery complex, as well as to establish the status of the monastery, purpose of the document, and also the names of an addressee and deliveryman and the date the document was delivered. |
