: One of the tragedies of the Great Patriotic War is the extermination of patients of Kolmovskaya psychiatric hospital in the vicinity of Novgorod during the autumn-winter 1941-1942. This article is based mainly on declassified documents from the Novgorod FSB archive. For direct commission of medical crimes the Nazis often were in need of obedient executors. Usually, Russian collaborators gave their consent to exterminate civilians. There were several reasons for that. Some of the employees of the Soviet medical institutions believed in the necessity of euthanasia for the incurable mentally ill patients in the first place, while others did not hesitate to follow the orders of the occupation authorities. Others tried to survive under occupation at any cost, even at the expense of the death of patients. The prevailing ideology of the Third Reich not only promoted but justified violence against millions of people. It perverted the idea of professional duty of doctors, transforming some of them from helpers to the suffering (who are obliged, according to the Hippocratic Oath, to fight for patients’ lives by all means) to killers.
