Рассматриваются две недавно опубликованные версии автобиографии М.Г. Попова (1893–1955) — выдающегося отечественного ботаника, работавшего во многих регионах СССР (от Львова до Сахалина), но особенно прославившегося исследованием растительного мира Средней Азии. В тексте приводятся события из жизни автора, описание его учёбы в Казанском и Петроградском университетах, организации Среднеазиатского университета, впечатления от политических и научных событий, характеристики учёных — его современников, а также многочисленные рассуждения автора по самым различным вопросам, в том числе общеполитическим. Следует отметить, что авторские характеристики многих известных отечественных учёных, хотя весьма интересны и нередко содержат ранее неизвестные факты, в то же время очень субъективны, а иногда находятся на грани (а то и за гранью) принятых приличий. Текст автобиографии имеет бесспорные художественные достоинства, особенно при описании природы и путешествий автора; интересны его рассуждения о связи личной жизни и научных успехов. К сожалению, публикаторы проигнорировали многие правила, принятые при обнародовании произведений такого характера, в частности, практически полностью отсутствуют необходимые комментарии об упомянутых лицах и иной справочный аппарат. : mikhail grigorievich Popov (1893–1955), a distinguished russian botanist, worked in many regions of the uSSr, from lvov to Sakhalin, although his main accomlishments were concerned with the studies of flora of middle asia. for political reasons (he was arrested in 1933 and sent into exile) permanent residence in moscow, leningrad and other large cities of the uSSr was forbidden to him. two versions of his unfinished autobiography have been published recently. m.g. Popov describes his childhood, his studies in Kazan and Petrograd universities, his first expeditions to european russia and middle asia, initial steps in the organisation of the university of middle asia in tashkent, etc. the book contains very vivid descriptions of nature, suggesting a literary talent. m.g. Popov mentions a number of prominent scientists (n.a. dimo, Kh.ya. gobi, a.ya. gordyagin, b.a. Keller, V.l. Komarov, e.P. Korovin, a.n. Krasnov, n.I. Kuznetsov, m.V. Kultyasov, V.I. lipskiĭ, n.a. maksimov, K.S. merezhkovskiĭ, I.I. Sprygin, a.l. takhtajan, b.a. fedchenko, o.a. fedchenko, and S.V. yuzepchuk), but his characteristics, although very interesting and revealing previously unknown facts, are very judgmental and often contain very subjective and offensive judgements, sometimes pushing the boundaries of accepted decency. the author describes his personal life and links the events in his life with his scientific achievements. Popov’s autobiography also contains his opinions on many subjects, particularly on political and historical events; he positions himself as a patriot of russia but sometimes tends to support conspiracy assumptions. unfortunately, the publishers of both versions of Popov’s autobiography failed to follow the generally accepted rules for publishing posthumous texts of this kind: thus, necessary explanatory notes and references are almost lacking.
