Filchner Ronne Ice Shelf Programme Report No 9 (1995)

The 10th International Workshop of the Filchner-Ronne Ice shelf Programme (FRISP) was held in Germany at the Institut für Angewandte Geodäsie (Institute of Applied Geodesy), HAG, at Leipzig, on 11th-14th June 1995. We are grateful to Prof. Hermann Seeger, the Director of HAG at Frankfurt am Main and at Leipzig, and the local organizers, Dr. Johannes Ihde and his colleagues, for their excellent organisation of the meeting, as well as the demonstration of local history, hospitality, and nature. In total 50 participants from Chile, Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, and the United Kingdom came together. This large number of participants as well as the presentations at the workshop demonstrate that FRISP continues to be a very active programme. For the first time two other programmes used the opportunity of a FRISP workshop to meet. The ESAMCA Project, which is funded by the EU, held one of its regular meetings, and a planning group for the Dronning Maud Land EPICA pre-site survey in 1996 came together at the same time. Also the group concerned with the ice-core drillings on Berkner Island had a separate discussion of the state of analysis and future plans. The FRISP Report No. 9 combines 24 written summaries of in total 30 talks, which were presented at the workshop. The papers collected in this volume present a good overview of the latest state of FRISP and the co-operation of the participating groups. The ice-shelf ocean interaction is still one of the major topics, a matter of both, field investigations and modelling. Seismic measurements and air-borne radio-echo soundings gave new insight into ice thickness and water depth beneath the ice shelf in the southernmost parts of the Ronne Ice Shelf. The use of ERS-1 data gives the chance to get better surface elevation data across the entire ice shelf. Ground based surveying is still ongoing, and during the last season the grounding line of Foundation Ice Stream was crossed towards the ascent of the inland ice for the first time. Berkner Island came into the focus of climate studies within a joint British-German collaboration. The 11th FRISP workshop will be hosted by the University of Stockholm early in June 1996. It is gratefully acknowledged that Alfred-Wegener-Institute once more covers the expenses for printing this report.
