On the 8th of May, 1547, a large fin whale (Balaenoptera physalus) became stranded on the coast of Holland near the tenth-century abbey of Egmond.1 The 68-foot-long whale lay on its back on the cold sand “with his belly turned upwards. The belly was mottled, white and black; the back was black.”
