Summary: | This study was conducted over one year to characterise a sub-population of eels, Anguilla Anguilla (Linnaeus, 1758), in the El Mellah Lagoon (north-eastern Algeria) based on external and internal anatomical criteria, according to their degree of silvering (sexual maturation; EELREP index). In this study, we sampled 180 eels, of which 88% were females, 5% males and 7% sexually undifferentiated individuals. The mean values of length (TL, FV: 504 ± 57.76 mm; MII: 407 ± 17.3), body weight (BW, FV: 192 ± 74.92; MII: 109 ± 15.56), ocular index (OI, FV: 7.60 ± 2.91, MII: 6.80 ± 1.53) and gonado-somatic index (GSI, FV: 0.68 ± 0.64, MII: 0.06 ± 0.02) of migrating silver eels were significantly higher than those of yellow resident eels. In silver eels, GSI was correlated with TL, BW and age; the pectoral fin index (PFI) showed a positive correlation with OI and a negative correlation with TL; OI showed significant positive correlations with age and negative correlations with the gut index (IGU). The females were ready ... |
