A report is written on commission from the Department for Environment Protection in Norway. Are to be used by Sysselmannen at Svalbard. Audun Hjelle is responsible for the geological part at NP. Problem: Economical forces has a growing pressure on Svalbard's nature and the increasing traffic in the archipelago necessitates a general surveillance of the geologically interesting localities/ areas. It is natural to first look at the parts of Svalbard where the traffic is busiest. The important questions then become: 1) How is the condition in the most interesting localities/ areas within the heaviest utilized parts of Svalbard? 2) If damages occur or are anticipated, which are the precautions one ought to take to soften or counteract damages?Locality descriptions and geological maps. This dataset has been created for the Governor of Svalbard (Sysselmesteren). It is based on a report (in Norwegian) from the Nordic Council of Ministers: [Criteria for the protection of geological elements and cultural heritage. Greenland, Iceland and Svalbard]. TemaNord publication number 2005:541, 127 pp. It was written by the Working Group on Nature, Cultural Heritage and Outdoor Activities, within the Nordic Action Plan for the Protection of the Natural and Cultural Heritage in the Arctic.
