Anthropogenic use of these areas through peat cutting drainage and thawing permafrost can turn these areas into a massive source of carbon. In Switzerland, the extraction of peat has been prohibited since the adoption of the Rothenthurminitiative in 1987 and the resulting protection of all peatlands. However, there are some areas in Switzerland that are still strongly characterised by peat extraction. One of these protected landscapes is the Schwantenau mire landscape in the canton of Schwyz. In the Schwantenau mire landscape, there is a path that leads through the main area of the still existing raised bog. This path is used by various recreational users. The effects of this recreational use are to be recorded with the help of orthomosaics collected with unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV's) between July and October 2022, as well as a census of people with wildlife cameras.
