2013-2015 ice core and firn air studies of carbon-14 and bubble closure at Summit, Greenland
The main goal of this study involved the thorough characterization of in situ cosmogenic carbon-14 (14C), including 14C carbon dioxide (14CO2), 14C carbon monoxide (14CO), and 14C methane (14CH4), through the entire firn column and in ice just below close-off at Summit, Greenland. This involved samp...

Summary: | The main goal of this study involved the thorough characterization of in situ cosmogenic carbon-14 (14C), including 14C carbon dioxide (14CO2), 14C carbon monoxide (14CO), and 14C methane (14CH4), through the entire firn column and in ice just below close-off at Summit, Greenland. This involved sampling of the firn air open porosity in May 2013, the shallow firn matrix in May/Jun 2014, and the deeper fin, Lock-In-Zone and ice below closeoff to ~130 meters (m) in May/June 2015. Additional samples were collected to explore the effect of bubble trapping on [CH4] and noble gas ratios using high resolution methods. This data set, currently contains the following measurements and analyses: 1) 14CO, 14CO2 and 14CH4 data from measurements in firn air at Greenland Summit. 2) 14CO and 14CH4 measurements in mature ice below close off from 90-130m at Greenland Summit. 3) Supporting firn air trace gas measurements for firn model tuning 4) Noble gas isotope measurements in firn air 5) high-resolution measurements of CH4 and air content in the lock-in zone The following measurements are still undergoing final interpretation and will be included at a later date: 6) [CO] and CO stable isotopes in firn air 7) in situ cosmogenic 14CO and 14CH4 in the firn matrix from 0-130m 8) 14CO2 from the firn matrix and ice below closeoff |
