Actions are underway in the U.S. to be proactive and minimize predicted climate change impacts and protect important ecosystem services. Climate change stressors such as changing sea surface temperature, sea level, storm surge, coastal flooding and ocean acidification will be felt economically and culturally at the local level in coastal communities. Marine protected areas (MPA) and surrounding areas are implementing actions to help lessen the predicted impacts of climate change. Dredged mud is being sprayed over open-water areas to raise marsh elevations and grasses planted to stabilize these areas to combat rising sea levels. Nearshore oyster reefs are being constructed to dissipate wave energy and storm surge and better protect beaches. Seagrass areas are being restored and enhanced to ...
