No abstracts are to be cited without prior reference to the author.The use of macroscopic visual scales to determine the gonadal and sexual maturity of fishes is an important tool in order to estimate maturity ogives, i.e. the proportion of a length group or age class that will contribute to the spawning biomass. Ibis is possible only if a clear distinction between llll1llature and mature specunen can be obtained. Furthermore, the Baltic cod has a long spawning season extending from April to September and identification of different developmental stages can e.g. be used to determine timing of spawning of different stock components. By applying histological technics a more exact determination of the gonadal development can be made, and subsequently used to verify and improve the power of macroscopic visual scales. A macroscopic scale including ten different female developmental stages used by the EU funded Baltic CORE and STORE projects is validated histologically in the present study. Preliminary results ...
