Producers are faced with increasing requirements for documentation on sound farming practices, i.e. contents of fish feeds, drug use etc. The average consumer may perhaps be satisfied to know that the fish itself is healthy and normal at the time of slaughter. Deformities in farmed fish clearly represent a problem in this context. If fish with deformities reach the market, consumers may react adversely. A strategy in which deformed fish is produced and subsequently rejected before marketing is hazardous as well as expensive, and can hardly be sustained for a prolonged period of time. And, although individuals displaying deformities may be regarded as a normal feature of any biological population, sudden increases in number of deformed specimen clearly indicates suboptimal conditions. ... |
