Results from the mesocosm showed an exponential stomach evacuation and a feeding rhythm with two non-feeding periods (noon to late afternoon and midnight to morning). Field samples taken over a 24hour period in Skagerrak (1995 and 1996) showed higher variation in stomach content weight than the mesocosm samples, and only one period of no-feeding could be observed. Daily ration was comparable in the mesocosm (70, 101 and 81mg dw*g dw-1*d-1) and the 1995 field samples (98mg), but only 49mg in the 1996 field samples. Stomach content weight, liver index and condition factor (Fulton K) were determined in juveniles sampled by trawling on a total of 26 locations in the Skagerrak, Kattegat and western Baltic in early August 1996, 1997 and 1998.
