Evaluating the performance of stocked fry has been hampered by the lack of a mark with nonlethal detection properties. Oxytetracycline has been used to mark teleost otoliths for subsequent age assessment, but fish must be sacrificed for mark determination. We used the fluorochrome calcein (C30H26N2O13) to batch-mark Atlantic salmon fry, thereby opening up a wide variety of studies regarding the performance and survival of fry spawned, reared, or stocked under different treatment regimes. Calcein chemically binds with calcified structures and shows a marked increase in flourescence when complexed with alkaline earth metals. The marking solution is non-lethal to fish and can be used for immersion marking techniques. An advantage to immersion marking is that the mark can be applied to large numbers of fry simultaneously; this process may ...
