The underwater photographs are taken using a metal frame (50 x 50 cm) and a Hasselblad SWC in an underwater housing. The technique is based on stereo- photographs developed by Thomas Lundälv. Digital image analysis was carried out using Adobe Photoshop and the plug-in Fovea Pro for measurements. An efficient method using the RGB- model of Photoshop was developed to retrieve community data of macrobenthic solitary and colonial organisms. The method is “non destructive” and therefore suitable for repetitively sampling. A long-term study (1977- today) of temporal variations and succession in Kongsfjord/Svalbard showed a correlation between increase of brown-algae and the sea urchin Strongylocentrotus sp. and the decline of the actinia Urticina sp. ...
