Recent efforts to summarize quantitative ecosystem indicators for fisheries management have identified size-based indicators as an important class of indicators for tracking fishery exploitation effects on fish communities (Cury and Christensen 2005, Kruse et al. 2006, Hall et al. 2006). Two indicators that have been found to be relatively explanatory of fishing induced changes at a more system-wide level are community size spectrum (CSS) and k-dominance curves. These indicators have been derived for several systems (Greenstreet and Hall 1996, Rice & Gislason 1996, Duplisea et al. 1997, Greenstreet et al. 1999, Bianchi et al. 2000, Zwanenburg 2000) using time series of survey information.
