With the extension of the fisheries jurisdiction to 200 miles in 1975, Iceland introduced new measures to protect young juvenile fish. The mesh size in trawls was increased from 120 mm to 155 mm in 1977. Only in the fisheries for redfish was 135 mm mesh size allowed in certain areas. In addition a system was implemented whereby fishing can be forbidden immediately in areas where the number of small fish in the catches exceeds a certain percentage (25% < 55 cm for cod and saithe and 25% < 48 cm for haddock).
