Mechanical characterization of sedimentary rocks derived from Svalbard for possible use in local road constructions

The dataset deals with the mechanical characterization of sedimentary rocks collected along the banks of Longyear river in proximity of Longyearbyen (Svalbard) at the junction of Bolterdalen and Adventdalen valleys. Considering the use of the rocks as possible local construction materials for new ro...

Considering the use of the rocks as possible local construction materials for new road infrastructures, three types of laboratory tests were performed for mechanical characterization: Los Angeles (LA) tests, micro-Deval (MDE) tests and Repeated Load Triaxial Tests (RLTTs). Five specimens were investigated by means of LA tests, five specimens were investigated by means of MDE tests and four specimens were investigated by means of RLTTs. The grading curve of the four specimens investigated with RLTTs corresponded to a typical one commonly adopted in Norway for road base layers (0-31.5 mm). Specimen 1 and specimen 2 had water content w=2%, specimen 3 and specimen 4 had water content w=7%. RLTTs were performed following the code “EN 13286-7 Cyclic load triaxial test for unbound mixtures” according to Multi-Stage Low Stress Level (MS LSL) testing procedure. The spreadsheets showing the RLTTs results report the dynamic stress and the triaxial stress exerted in the testing device and the axial strains and the radial strains measured by a total of six Linear Variable Differential Transformers (LVDTs).
