Dimethylsulfoniopropionate (DMSP) was analyzed as DMS after alkali cleavage (Dacey and Blough, 1987) with the same analytical procedure as described for DMS. Inorganic nutrients nitrate, phosphate and silicate were determined on an Evolution III Autoanalyzer (Alliance Instruments GmbH, Salzburg, Austria). Methods were modified after Grasshoff (Grasshoff et al., 1998; SEAL Analytical). : Sampling with the Kemmerer bottles was part of the “Ice station (ICE)” event.
