Description
Summary:The South African component of the international South Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation project (SAMOC-SA) aims to characterise the time-mean and time-varying components of the SAMOC in the South Atlantic Ocean and monitor the variability of the main Southern Ocean frontal systems associated with the Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC), south of Africa. Here we present processed magnitude and direction of hourly currents throughout the water column (38.36 - 190.36 m) from an ADCP at location M1 (46.750°S; 37.9000°E) on the Prince Edward Island shelf, between 24 April 2016 and 22 April 2017. ... : A bottom-mounted, upward-looking, 150 kHz RD Instruments Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP) was configured with a bin size of 8 m and a blanking distance of 3.52 m, and deployed at location M1 (46.7500°S; 37.9000°E), on the shelf between Marion Island and Prince Edward Island. The instrument measured hourly magnitude and direction throughout the water column (38.36 - 196.36 m) between 24 April 2016 09h00 and 22 April 2017 07h00. These hourly values were corrected for magnetic declination and only hourly values which showed ≥ 75 % good beam data were used. ...
