Description
Summary:The South African component of the international South Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation project (SAMOC-SA) aims to characterise the time-mean and time-varying components of the SAMOC in the South Atlantic Ocean and monitor the variability of the main Southern Ocean frontal systems associated with the Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC), south of Africa. Here we present processed magnitude and direction of daily currents throughout the water column (17.16 - 145.16 m) from an ADCP at location M1 (46.773°S; 37.912°E) on the Prince Edward Island shelf, between 22 April 2018 and 04 May 2019. ... : A bottom-mounted, upward-looking, 150 kHz RD Instruments Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP) was configured with a bin size of 8m and a blanking distance of 3.52m, and deployed at location M1 (46.773°S; 37.912°E), on the shelf between Marion Island and Prince Edward Island. The instrument measured hourly magnitude and direction throughout the water column (17.16 - 145.16m) between 22 April 2018 and 04 May 2019. These hourly values were corrected for magnetic declination, and then averaged to daily means for each depth bin. Only hourly values which showed ≥ 75% good beam data were used, and daily values were only generated for days on which there were 75% or more hourly readings. The data were then formatted in a .txt file with data values separated by commas. ...
