After weeks of hardships and privations in the mountains they finally reached Kamloops. From Kamloops they journeyed to Westminster and Victoria, but they returned to the mainland to visit the Cariboo gold diggings before sailing for England via the Isthmus of Panama. Within the first ten years the book had run through eight editions. The fact that the book attracted immediate attention may be attributed in part to its literary merit. -- Lowther, B.
