Forschungsgegenstand der vorliegenden Arbeit ist das Phänomen des phonetischen Perspektivwechsels (PPW) in Form paraverbaler Ausspracheassimilation und dessen Etablierung als nachweisbares Element interkultureller Kommunikationskompetenz. Die Forschungsarbeit konzentriert sich auf die Frage, ob sich der phonetische Perspektivwechsel (PPW) in Form paraverbaler Ausspracheassimilation, als messbares Element interkultureller Kommunikationskompetenz, wissenschaftlich nachweisen lässt. "Empathie" gilt als entscheidendes Element der interkulturellen Kompetenzforschung (Bolten 2007, Chen/Starosta 1997, Deardorff 2006, Fritz et al. 2004, OECD 2003, Ruben 1976, Spitzberg 1989) und dient vorliegender Forschungsarbeit als Grundlage für die Herleitung des PPW. Der Perspektivwechsel gilt als konkrete Form und Ausdruck interkultureller Empathie und wird von Young Yun Kim und Brent D. Ruben (1988) als zentrale Voraussetzung für den Erwerb interkultureller Kompetenz beschrieben.
