Dataset: Identification and quantification of lipids in wild Atlantic salmon, farmed Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar), and salmon feed by GC-MS

The main objective of this study was to determine and quantitate the fatty acid levels in wild and farmed Atlantic salmon, with a focus on the saturated fatty acids, monounsaturated fatty acids, polyunsaturated fatty acids, n-3 and n-6 fatty acids, as well as the nutritional quality indices; the ath...

This is evaluated in the context of nutritional differences by consumption of these two products. Additionally, the fatty acid profile of salmon feed was also of interest to compare the similarities between the fatty acid composition of farmed salmon and its feed. Three fish of each kind, as well as the salmon feed, were analysed by the use of a GC-MS (ISQ QD, Thermo Fisher Scientific) in TIC acquisition mode, with the accompanying software Chromeleon v.7.2.8. The raw data is presented as retention times and peak area (counts/min). Additionally, the relative area (percentage of total peak area) are also presented for the lipid fractions. In general, the raw data was processed to show the identified fatty acids and their respective quantities in wild and farmed salmon, and salmon feed. These are presented in separate sheets within the file. The respective lipid fractions for both fish are also given as separate sheets. Additionally, three sheets were prepared as comparisons to offer a better overview over the processed data. A table of contents are given to further help the navigation between the sheets. The processed data can be used to give an estimate of the fatty acid levels in wild and farmed Atlantic salmon, as well as salmon feed.
