Description
Pulse oximetry is an optical non-invasive diagnostic method through which you can measure blood saturation with oxygen and other parameters. Perfusion index is one of the other attributes you can measure with pulse oximetry. Perfusion index shows a ratio of newly oxygenated blood volume in site of measurement to total blood volume. The aim of my thesis is to monitor the change of the perfusion index through practical experiment which simulate artefact such as motion artefact or artefacts lowering tissue perfusion (hypothermia of tissue or tourniquet). For experiment the devices from Masimo and Nellcor were used. The experiment results show that the artefacts play a significant role in the measurement of the perfusion index which should be taken into account in clinical practice. Modern devices are able to detect these artefacts and alarm the personnel or to stop the measurement altogether.
