Description
Summary:Water vole (Arvicola sp.) is known to be pest species in agriculture, orchards and also the forestry. Arvicola amphibius is mostly in lowland country in habitats with high level of ground water. Arvicola amphibius is known from mountain localities. Both these species damage young trees by gnawing of bark on the roods. The most frequent damage was found on trees three years after planting (60% of cases). In older trees (more than 7 years after planting) damage is lower (3%). Trees are damaged mostly during the winter. In other seasons damage is similar to that of the common vole. As a damage prevention, the tree planting into the wire basket is the mostly recommended.
