| Summary: | Raspberry constitutes a crop, geographically spread across all the continents of the Earth, with the exception of Antarctica. The medicinal use of the plant has been known since the antiquity and it later became domesticated, with the cultivation in gardens, for the consumption of its fresh fruit. Nowadays the cultivation of raspberries and small fruit plants in general, is widespread in the world, with the cultivated area demonstrating an increasing tendency from 1960s to the present. This increase also entails an increase in world production in tons of fruit per year. The modern tendency to consume food with high nutritional value and beneficial properties in health has greatly contributed to the development and improvement of the plant and the modernization of cultivation practices. With Europe being the continent with the largest production per year in raspberries, the interest in growing raspberries and small fruit plants is also approaching Cyprus. In order to develop and create new production areas, such as raspberries for Cyprus, it is necessary to know the morphological and physiological characteristics of the plant, the requirements in environmental and weather conditions and the application of appropriate cultivation practices. The combination of these and the ongoing cooperation with specially trained individuals will be the key to the success of the new cultivation. In Cyprus, there are 10 year- old raspberry cultivations, which require improvement and further development, as efforts are being made to install new ones. The aim of this bibliographic review is to get acquainted with raspberry cultivation and to assess the situation in Cyprus. Τα σμέουρα αποτελούν μια καλλιέργεια, με γεωγραφική εξάπλωση σε όλες τις ηπείρους της Γης, με εξαίρεση την Ανταρκτική. Από την αρχαιότητα ήταν γνωστή η φαρμακευτική χρήση του φυτού και αργότερα έγινε εξημέρωση του, με την καλλιέργεια σε κήπους, για κατανάλωση του νωπού καρπού. Σήμερα η καλλιέργεια σμέουρων και γενικότερα των μικρών οπωροφόρων είναι παγκοσμίως διαδεδομένη, με την καλλιεργούμενη έκταση να έχει αυξητική τάση από την δεκαετία του 1960 μέχρι και σήμερα. Η αύξηση αυτή συνεπάγεται και την αύξηση της παγκόσμιας παραγωγής σε τόνους καρπού ανά έτος. Η σύγχρονη τάση για κατανάλωση τροφών με υψηλή διατροφική αξία και ευεργετικές ιδιότητες στον ανθρώπινο οργανισμό συνέβαλε σημαντικά στην ανάπτυξη και βελτίωση του φυτού και τον εκσυγχρονισμό των καλλιεργητικών πρακτικών. Με την Ευρώπη να αποτελεί την ήπειρο με την μεγαλύτερη παραγωγή ανά έτος στα σμέουρα, το ενδιαφέρον για καλλιέργεια σμέουρων και μικρών οπωροφόρων στρέφεται και προς την Κύπρο. Για την ανάπτυξη και την δημιουργία νέων κλάδων παραγωγής, όπως τα σμέουρα για την Κύπρο, είναι απαραίτητη η γνώση των μορφολογικών και φυσιολογικών χαρακτηριστικών του φυτού, των απαιτήσεων σε περιβαλλοντικές και καιρικές συνθήκες και η εφαρμογή κατάλληλων καλλιεργητικών πρακτικών. Ο συνδυασμός των προαναφερόμενων και η συνεχής συνεργασία με ειδικά καταρτισμένα άτομα θα αποτελέσουν το κλειδί για την επιτυχία της νέας καλλιέργειας. Στην Κύπρο υπάρχουν φυτείες σμέουρων ηλικίας 10 ετών που απαιτούν βελτίωση και περαιτέρω ανάπτυξη, καθώς γίνονται προσπάθειες για εγκατάσταση νέων. Στόχος της παρούσας βιβλιογραφικής ανασκόπησης είναι η ‘γνωριμία’ με την καλλιέργεια σμέουρων και η εκτίμηση της κατάστασης στην Κύπρο. Completed
