This paper discusses results of investigations of the early Holocene cultural layers of archaeological site Ust-Shilka-2. It is located in the southern taiga in the middle Yenisei river basin. Early Holocene cultural layers are located in the carbonate sandy sediments. Normally in Central Siberia carbonates are considered to be an indicator of arid and dry Sartan period (oxygene-isotope stage 2). Whereas during Holocene geochemical conditions had changed dramatically and they were leaching. However, palaeogeochemically there has been proved the principal possibility of carbonate accumulation in sandy sediments at that area during Holocene. Archaeological and palae-ontological research evidences that this archaeological site was habitated during short periods of time and the seasonality of habitation. Different ways of the site surface utilization is recorded for different periods of time. There is evidence for prehistoric houses (cultural layers 4c, 4d and 4e) and places for temporal artifact preparing places. Cultural material is dated by Mesolithic period due to characteristic features of stone splitting, artifact typology and stone artifact morphology which is typical for the East-Siberian region (Angara region and Kansk forest-steppe). The most evident correlations are estimated with artifacts from upper Angara area (Verkholenskaya Gora archaeological site). Strizova Gora archaeological site is another famous Mesolithic site which is spatially close to the studied site. However, there differences in the artifacts: a lots cline micronucleuses has been found at Ust-Shilka-2. They are not typical for Kansk Mesolithic. Results of investigations of Mesolithic cultural layers of Ust-Shilka-2 archaeological site evidences good perspectives for future archaeological, palaeoecological and absolute dating investigations both at this site and other archaeological sites.
