The article contains some observations on proper names (mainly names of rivers) related to the coast of the Okhotsk sea which occur in the work by the Russian 17 th c. traveller and writer N. Spafarius "The Tale of the Great River Amur". The proper names and their order of appearance in the narration enabled the author to conclude that "The Tale of the Great River Amur" is based on some written documents remaining unknown to us. These documents may have been written by the cossacks of Mikhail Stadukhin, who first explored these places in 1651-1656. The analysis of proper names is supported with the names of ships and boats which were used by Russian cossacks while sailing in the Arctic seas and in the basin of Amur and in the Okhotsk sea.
