Summary: | It is often assumed that forest grouse abundance in modern landscapes of North European taiga depends to a great extent on habitat changes caused by logging (especially changes in forest age structure). We have studied this in Eastern Fennoscan dia: Eastern Finland and Russian Karelia, (total area is about 300 000 sq. km). In these two areas there are huge differences in the intensity of forest landscape changes due to different strategies in logging and forestry management. Capercaillie and hazel grouse numbers in Russian Karelia are about twice as high as in Eastern Finland, but for black grouse the difference is insignificant. Critical negative habitat changes for capercaillie are: (1) very low old forest and bog proportions (less than 10 and 1215 %, respectively) (2) high ‘altered’ habitat proportions (more than 50 %). For black grouse there seemed to be no clear negative impact. Logging and forest management have more pronounced impact on hazel grouse and willow grouse numbers only in the Finnish study area in Russian taiga other factors (e.g., diseases and climate) may be of a greater importance. |
